Jack Betts is correct that we are missing "steady, out-front leadership" from Gov. Easley. However, he need not fear that all those now running for governor will adopt this no-show
standard. Fred Smith, a Republican colleague I have sat beside for three years, has held barbecues and spent the day in 95 counties while conducting a tireless "conversation with the
people." Smith's creed of "a little extra effort" will replace the current governor's creed of "work never killed anybody but why take a chance?"
